A Pleasant Distraction

I am deep in thought about the situation.

Meanwhile, here is my 'TOUCHE!' of the month:

You know about the Mormons Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints' practice of baptizing dead souls, thus converting them to their one true religion?

Well, those liars went back on their agreement to stop posthumously baptizing Jewish victims of the Holocaust.

My dear friends over at DailyKos have come up with a great backlash to this offense:

Converting dead Mormons into homosexuals, starting with Joseph Smith.

Once again... idiots are everywhere. Some of them happen to be Mormons.

And anyone can submit names to the temple to be baptized, even nonmembers and ex-members with chips on their shoulders the size of Michigan. It's the honor system. There is simple no way for temple workers to verify the heritage of the MILLIONS of names that come in, and the church has always taught that you need a family member's permission if they died within the last 100 (or 150, I can't remember) years.

And the church does not believe and has never believed that anyone who is baptized by proxy in the temple is "forced" into accepting it. It just affords them to the opportunity.

I'm not defending the morons who go through lists of Holocaust survivors (or the smart asses who submit names like JFK or CS Lewis) but just trying to give you a better picture.

And it's the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

I was only a teensy bit offended by the KOS post. =) Don't worry. It's just that people have this idea when they hear this story that we're gleefully thwarting people's free will by baptizing them and they don't know that anyone can send in names (Mickey Mouse and Batman have been submitted before) or that we don't believe people's souls are hauled off to the Mormon Heaven.

I absolutely understand why this is personal for many many people and why so many are offended, which is why the church DOES teach you have to have permission first. It makes me furious as well, because that isn't what the temple is supposed to be about and it makes us look stupid and pushy. I just don't think the useful thing to do is start being insulting about it.

RRHoof: What do Mormons think of Joseph Smith and the 14-yr old girl that he had feelings for and then acted on after explaining away as god's will ~ I'm simplifying here but just wondering.
p.s you should check out the documentary of Arthur Kane (bass player of the NY Dolls)~punk rock Mormon. Regards, Geener

I was reading about the baptism of the dead years ago in some article, and the author described it like this: The dead person who is baptized by proxy gets to choose whether or not to accept the baptism. Imagine the scene:

HEAVEN
St. Peter: Hey! Bob! Your great-granddaughter just baptized you a Mormom!
Bob: The hell you say! Well, I don't want to be a Mormon.
St. Peter: Okay, then. Talk to you later!

I would argue that, no matter what other problems there are with the LDS, the fact that they believe in the free will of the dead negates any problems that would arise from baptism of the dead by proxy. It's like someone praying for you, i.e. pointless if you don't believe in it.

What religion does to the LIVING is way more important and potentially repugnant. I've always found sanctification by grace (also known as unconditional election) to be completely perverse, for example.

Blaize- that's exactly what we believe happens when people are baptized by proxy. =)
